This opera, depicting the Battle of Ankara between Ottoman Sultan Bayezid and Mongolian Emperor Tamerlano, will be staged with the renowned composer Antonio Vivaldi’s pure and graceful narration. The tragic death of Bajazet, who lost the battle and was held captive by Tamerlano, was subject to many works by most artists of the 16th and 17th century. The festival offers the privilege of viewing this piece of Vivaldi, whose numerous artworks were lost at the end of the 18th century. Opera works of Vivaldi, who is known for his work “Four Seasons” the best, consigned to oblivion as well in the world when this very opera has been brought into the light by famous Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer.
TULIP MANIA / June 28, 2013, Friday / 2 Acts / Bahçeşehir Culture and Arts Center

Composed for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Turkey-Netherlands relations by Turkish composer Ali Hoca, this two act opera “Tulip Mania” is set up as a “tale” that starts in the 17th century Holland and ends in the Tulip Era in İstanbul. Although its librettist Şefik Kahramankaptan inspired by history, the characters are completely fictional. The adventurer nobleman Fink van Broot takes an interest in tulips which are very popular at that time. In search of the most precious and valuable tulips, his spirit for adventure takes him to the Ottoman Grand Vizier Damat Paşa’s mansion. During that period, Istanbul’s palace and people too, were living in “tulip madness”. The final of this vivid and melodic opera will surprise both our protagonist and the audience.

With Roberto Abbado as the conductor, baritone Marco Vratogna, tenor Stefano Secco, tenor Marco Berti and soprano Aleksandra Kurzak as the soloists, the Viva Verdi Gala Concert will take place in Hagia Eirene on July 1, 2013. These artists, who appeared in the grandest opera houses of the world, will be accompanied by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Dedicated to the bicentennial of Guiseppe Verdi’s birthday, conductor Roberto Abbado, representing the School of Franco Ferrara, and other guest artist will offer all the art-lovers a night to remember in the magnificent historical ambiance and acoustics of Hagia Eirene. Born into a dynastic musical family, Roberto Abbado has followed his uncle Claudio Abbado’s path to become an esteemed Maestro and since his early 20s has been conducting opera and symphonic orchestras all over the world. Marco Vratogna renowned worldwide both for his success in baritone parts of Verdi’s operas and his surprisingly large scale voice register; tenors Marco Berti and Stefano Secco both known for publicly acclaimed performances in Italian operas as well as the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak being the daughter of an opera singer and one of the soloists of Metropolitan Opera with her mind blowing magical voice are among the world stars to meet with Turkish audience through this concert.

A must-have since the beginning of the festival, presenting a story from the most glorious period of the Ottoman Empire, this opera illustrates the most important features of the Ottoman culture: forgiveness and tolerance. The story of Konstanze, a captive in Selim Pasha’s palace and her fiancé Belmonte, the noble Spanish men trying to save her, will find meaning and be enlivened with the character of Selim Pasha who helps their happy ending with honorable willingness. Renowned guest soprano Christiane Boesiger, diversifying from the opera singers who mainly stand out with their voices, is known for her high acting performance in world art arena and will embellish this year’s festival in the production of the Abduction from the Seraglio. The artist known for her successful performances in Mozart operas, gained great acclaim for performing Konstanze part at two different opera houses in Germany in 2012-2013 season.

This opera depicts a section of the tragic life of the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV, the strongest, the most fearless, highly educated and tactful emperor and a good composer who prohibited the usage of tobacco and alcohol, made expeditions and repressed rebellions during his reign, will be performed to the audience through an unforgettable production. For the audience at Topkapı Palace, watching the story of Sultan Murad IV, who was born as the son of the Ottoman Emperor Ahmed I and Kösem Sultan and was raised in the Topkapı Palace, will definitely be an exciting experience.
